VACANCY FILLED: Graduate/Assistant Urban Designer


As a Graduate/Assistant Urban Designer, you would work in collaboration with senior colleagues to liaise with developers, local communities, other consultants and local authorities on a range of multi-disciplinary projects including urban extensions, urban regeneration, development masterplans and preparation of accompanying reports.

We are looking for someone with strong design and narrative building skills, that can clearly articulate how a project has been developed through text and drawn information.

Key responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation of high-quality planning documents, including visions, design and access statements, design codes, feasibility studies and associated drawings.
  • Work with the wider planning team to make sure relevant policy and guidance is followed.
  • Attending site visits and client meetings.
  • Communicating with clients, design team and stakeholders, as appropriate.
  • Provide a positive contribution to wider elements of running the practice, including helping to prepare marketing collateral, presentation images, social media posts and website updates.

The right candidate will be able to show:-

  • Ability to work at various scales from high level masterplans through to small scale interventions and contribute to the design of places from concept through to planning.
  • Strong research capability and ability to collate key information about a site/ project, including political, environmental, social, economic and spatial considerations.
  • Ability to present information in a clear format, including mapping and analysis at various scales.
  • An understanding of best practice urban design principles.
  • Passion about creating places and spaces that improve people lives and working for greater sustainability and positive environmental impact.
  • A positive and creative approach to projects.
  • Ability to work positively and collaboratively as part of a dynamic team.
  • Ability to develop positive working relationships with both colleagues and external consultants/ clients.
  • Confidence to contribute to meetings and share ideas.
  • A keenness to learn and test new ideas, help develop new products and ways of working.
  • Self-motivation, proactiveness and organisation.
  • A ‘can-do’ attitude and ability to be proactive, to use initiative and work autonomously, as well as part of a team.

Essential IT/graphic skills include:-

  • Excellent visual presentation skills, experienced in advanced graphic communication techniques such as 3D modelling, hand sketching, rendering, urban design diagrams and technical drawings.
  • Experience using the Adobe Creative Suite to produce presentation images and reports, with a particular focus on Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator. 
  • Experience using CAD software to a reasonable standard.

 Must have completed an undergraduate degree in a related subject, such as:-

  • Architecture 
  • Urban Design
  • Urban Planning
  • Town Planning
  • Built Environment
  • Urban Design

Other requirements include:-

  • Full UK driving licence plus access to a car.
